Practical advice, little reminders, and moments worth sharing — from the Auckland Dance Club floor to you.
If you're new to dancing, resist the urge to wear your smartest shoes on your first night out. Dancing shoes should have a smooth leather or suede sole — this lets you turn and glide without catching on the floor. Rubber soles grip too much and can put strain on your knees.
If you're not sure yet, a flat, smooth-soled shoe is perfectly fine while you're finding your feet.
At Auckland Dance Club, everyone is welcome to ask anyone to dance — regardless of who leads or follows. A simple "Would you like to dance?" with a smile is all it takes. And if someone asks you and you'd prefer to sit this one out, a polite "Thank you, maybe the next one?" is perfectly fine.
One of the best things about dancing to a live band is that the music breathes. Before you step onto the floor, take a moment to listen — feel the rhythm, notice where the phrases begin and end. When you dance in time with what the musicians are doing, something magical happens.
Annie and Murray are wonderful at giving dancers that space. Let the music lead you both.
